Can't Help Falling A Novel Kara Isaac 9781501117343 Books

Can't Help Falling, by Kara Isaac, had me smiling more than a dozen times in the very first chapter. Isaac's wry humor didn't let up throughout the book and had me laughing out loud more than a few times. Which is interesting considering this book deals with the serious subject of how the choices we make, particularly the bad ones, have consequences that can hurt us and other people.

Emelia Mason is just such a person. Feeling the weight of her mistakes, she moves to England to try and atone for the damage she's done. Peter Carlisle is an Olympic-bound rowing athlete, who feels he has a responsibility to make up for his own choices too. They are two overachieving, mistake making people, heavily influenced by their childhoods, in search of atonement and redemption. They find each other along the way, and romance, even though they do everything they can to deny it.

The chemistry between these two was described by cousin Lacey as being so strong that, "The national grid is about to call and ask for it's electricity back". Love that! Another favorite line, "Don't ever date a guy who believes in a drug-free, silent birth". I was dying laughing at that one.

Peter's brother Victor was the perfect brother...perfectly obnoxious, that is, and hateful, self-absorbed and constantly in need of bailing out of trouble. The kind of guy you can't help but dislike.

Friends Allie and Jackson, from Close to You, are true friends who don't disappear when trouble comes, letting their Christianity shine, all while being "real".

Isaac tells a charming story, full of wit, angst and romance. The eye-opening experience of being loved by God, regardless of anything we've done, is the overall theme that comes to a brilliant conclusion by the books end. There's nothing we can do to make God love us less, a line Peter himself quotes, but has a hard time believing. Can't Help Falling is an enjoyable entertaining read I happily recommend. 4.5 stars!

I appreciate Howard Books making a copy of Can't Help Falling available for review.

Can't Help Falling A Novel Kara Isaac 9781501117343 Books Reviews

Emelia Mason is in Oxford, England seeking absolution for something horrific she feels she set in motion and she longs with all her heart to recreate herself in the process. Peter Carlisle just wants to return to the man he was before an injury sidelined him on the way to Olympic rowing glory. They are brought together by combined charitable work and a little bit of Narnian magic. The story that flows from that beginning contains more than a whiff of that fantastical place.

This was a marvelous book! I loved the underlying theme of C.S. Lewis' Narnia books that was woven throughout the whole story. It added a wonderful level of depth. Emelia was such a sympathetic character, I wanted her to find her happy ending, spiritually, emotionally and romantically. I hurt for the hand she'd been dealt in life and for the choices she made. Peter was a great foil for her, someone who got such a solid start and turned into such a solid guy but still struggled. Kara Isaac does such a wonderful job with characterization, I felt like I could really relate to these two people.

I also enjoyed the spiritual journey this book took me on from Emelia's point of view and, in the end, from Peter's as well. It can be almost impossible to find God in tragedy, especially if your introduction to Him is faulty. Emelia carried a lot of baggage on her road to redemption and the way this story portrayed God's pursuit of her was a lovely thing - even a little magical. Peter's struggle with forgiveness was so incredibly common and a message that we all need to remember. The ending was incredibly romantic, so much so, that I went back and re-read it the next day.

Can't Help Falling was a magical, meaningful story that spoke of forgiveness and the preciousness of each person to God. A deeply moving, yet whimsical treat, it was well worth the read. I'll be eagerly looking forward Kara Isaac's next great story!
With a hidden depth that is slowly revealed as you read the story, these authentic and multifaceted characters bring this story to life. The Narnia-styling give the story just enough whimsy and flair to keep things light.

Steeped in a love for all things Narnia, Emelia our quirky heroine has moved to Oxford with the desire to save a failing non-profit company. Emelia thinks that she can atone for past mistakes, by doing good and helping others. But will the secrets she keeps, be the one thing that keeps her from recognizing her dreams?

Peter is a star-athlete and coach for the Oxford rowing team. While searching for a teacup to complete his mother’s set, he is surprised to find more than what he’s looking for. As Peter struggles to come to terms with the past, will secrets keep him from realizing the true dream placed on his heart?

The sweet romance and with gentle reminders of forgiveness are the hallmarks that are sure to bring a smile to your face. There are some real-world issues dealt with in this story, however, don’t let that steer you away.

(I purchased a copy of this book for my collection. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)
