Prom Crashers The Romantic Comedies Erin Downing Books Reviews

Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies are always a fun read. These books are not necessarily the best written novels but the stories are always fun and you know you will get a happy ending. I think some adult romances could take a note from these books b/c they are characterized well which is much of the battle in writing any novel since you want your characters, for the most part, to be endearing and relatable.
It's prom season, and what better way to celebrate than reading PROM CRASHERS?

Emily met Ethan while working in the mall. He wrote his digits on a napkin, but her co-worker (Charlie, a good friend) used the napkin without realizing it. So, while Emily finds herself crushing over Ethan, she now has no way to contact him, until she comes up with a plan.

Emily wants to crash all the area high school proms with her three best friends. However, it's easier said than done. None of them are going to their respective proms and thus they don't have formal attire. Security at other proms could cause problems, and who knows if they can even find Ethan. They agree to the plan as a way to pass time during the super-boring last months of senior year. Even if they don't find Ethan, it will be an adventure to remember forever.

Erin Downing takes a ritual high school event and turns it into something crazy wild and totally fun. The four friends must find ways to sneak around security and handle multiple proms on one night. Be sure to check out the author's MySpace page for a Dancing Queen (Simon Romantic Comedies) playlist, as well, which was the author's previous release.

Add PROM CRASHERS to your pile of books to read because it's fabulously fun!

Something really bugged me about this book.

Prom Crashers by Erin Downing is about four teenagers who decide to crash all the local proms so that one girl, Emily can find a guy she met at a coffee shop. He gave her his number, and she lost it. It is a cute idea for a story, and I actually liked it. All her 'prom crasher' friends had quirks and were seriously funny in their own way.

But Ethan, the love interest Emily met at the coffee shop? I just don't see the real appeal. He is cast as the perfect boy. He is constantly described as being 'tasty' and 'yummy,' but since the whole book is mainly about trying to find him, we don't see much of him. I feel like he was more of an acquaintence in this book than the real thing. He didn't have any quirks like the other love interest, Max, who is an aspiring journalist and is always investigating for weird stories to make his break.

Max. I liked Max. I seriously thought that Downing was going to have Emily pick Max at the end. No such luck. Emily and Max have been best friends for a long, looooong time, and in this book, sparks are flying. But you know what? Those sparks are described at the end as the result of them being caught up in the promesque experience. You know what? Max was acting jealous before they even started the adventures. The promesque feeling doesn't explain that. Max is the boy next door, the one most girls WOULD fall for. It may be stereo type, but I don't think we saw enough of Ethan to really get his appeal over the classic best friend/love interest.

AND SPARKS ARE SPARKS. P

Most people may not agree with me, but I stand TEAM MAX.
If I had to describe Prom Crashers in a single word, it'd be "cute". (Or "adorkable". Really depends on my mindset that day P) You know those books perfect for a lazy afternoon? This one's it. Right off the bat, we start with a conflict that is, in and of itself, indulging. Then we meet a quartet of quirky and distinguished characters who execute the plot beautifully. The composition of the book worked for me.

Perhaps what kept me turning pages the most, though, were the many subplots that emerge when you dive deeper into the story. Em may be getting herself stuck in a love triangle; Charlie might not have a clear channel of communication with his boyfriend, and it might just ruin his relationship; Sid just wants to get a break and jump start her career; Max longs to write a story that will sell.

This book isn't just about prom(s), or finding the boy you saw once almost and whose number you lost. It's about relationships making sense of them, finding how they figure into your life, learning how they shape themselves differently with each passing day. It's not blatantly stated anywhere, but if you think about it, all of those themes subtly pop up.

I do have two little complaints though. One, I thought Em's exploration of her friendship with Max was developed well, but when it came to the end, it was dealt with in a shallow manner that was not the way that subplot deserved to be tied up. (This subplot was the most important, in my opinion.) Two, I didn't like how Em's and Max's relationship was defined and I wholeheartedly disagree!

Two isn't really a valid argument, because this is my own selfishness speaking, but hey, this is all about giving reviews and opinions, right?

All things considered, I'd recommend this book if you're looking for a light, fun read. Like any of the Romantic Comedies series' books (which I love, and will probably review all of them here), it's enjoyable without being too serious or heavy. Check it out.
