With friends like Hazel, who needs rattlesnakes?

When I got to the part where Hazel took her keys (phone? whatever) I wanted to throw my Kindle. At every college in America they preach safety to female students. Don't walk alone, don't get into a situation where you could be at risk, etc. And what does Hazel do? She puts her roommate, and supposed best friend, into a situation that could put her at risk. They were in a bar, she'd been drinking, and Hazel took her keys away from her in order to get her to go home with some random guy. Just so she could lose her virginity. 1) why is it any of Hazel's business. 2) why was Hazel so concerned about that? 3) Hazel almost killed this story for me.

I didn't like Shannon either. She was a huge doormat to her friends. She let it go for WEEKS without saying anything to them. She should have packed her stuff and moved out of the apartment. But, instead, she goes and gets a fake boyfriend so her friends will get off her back. Just stand up for yourself. And after she storms off after finally standing up for herself, her friends get sick with worry? Oh, please. They weren't concerned when they took her keys. Why not just slip her a roofie at the same time?

The only redeeming thing about this book was Jett. And even he seemed to be a bit immature at times. But, he was such a good guy, I could over look it. However, if there are more books in this series, I don't see me continuing with them.

For Real was a quick, sweet read - nothing mind-blowing, but very nice entertainment for a Sunday afternoon nonetheless. Shannon is a college student who is taking her studies very seriously. She has nothing against boys and dating, she just hasn’t met the right guy to fit in her schedule yet. Her friends don’t seem to get it though and are constantly trying to hook her up with someone. One evening the girls are spending the night out and the talk for Shannon’s virginity and non-dating is once again the topic of the evening. The girls are trying to make her talk to a boy in the bar - any boy that she fancies. Shannon has just about had it with her pushy friends when Jett, a guy she briefly me in a café couple day ago, walks in. She goes to Jett and asks for him to take her home, leaving her friends to think that she left to go make out with a guy she just met… Shannon pours out some of her bad feelings to Jett and together they come up with a plan to fake a relationship.

Shannon and Jett are both very sweet characters and from early on you can tell that the feelings they have for each other are genuine. I enjoyed their playful relationship very much, but I was also very frustrated – I didn’t quite get it why they had to fake it when it was so painfully obvious that they both wanted to be together-together more than anything. Why not just be, why fight against it? Why fight against love and happiness?
This book was an ok read to me I enjoyed reading it in the beginning but the book did get on my nerves with Jett and Shannon continuously saying "Fake Boyfriend" to each other. It has already been established that they have embarked in a fake relationship so the constant saying of it was annoying. Also when Shannon blew up on her friends....that was stupid because her reasoning wasn't even a good one nor was her reasoning for getting mad at them the night she met Jett. Now I did like that the main character Jett is an Asian that was something that was different and I enjoyed that. But overall this book just didn't hit the mark for me the character development wasn't there and the bond between me the reader and the characters wasn't there. Overall the book didn't do it for me and it's a 2.5 rating to me it had holes in the storyline that were never filled in. SO in my opinion I say you should buy the book since it's only $0.99 and this review is based ONLY on the book and what I read NOT the author as a whole.
Another book where a 1/2 star rating would have been great, 3.5-stars for this entertaining read.

I found myself laughing out loud a few times, very entertaining. The characters of Shannon and Jett were really great, and sweet. When they were together they just made sense. You saw these characters really fall for each other, there wasn't all the sex getting in the way, they were free to just be themselves , even if they were both hiding a secret. Luckily, their secreta were not of the type of secret that usually ruins a relationships, so it is a welcome and sweet revelation in the book.

I absolutely loved the dialogue in this book, and how the author let it tell a good portion of the story versus a bunch of internal dialogue or narration. I feel a story seems more realistic the way this was written...bravo on that!!

There were a few issues with the writing.

*I found myself thinking more time has passed than actually did at times.

*I didn't really get a vivid picture of what the characters looked like. Jett became a bit clearer at about the halfway mark of the book. Other than big tits and a big ass, Shannon was a bit hazy. I mean, I had a better picture of the apartments or bars in this story than the characters, IMO. I felt like the author had a somewhat ethnically diverse cast, but was afraid to state it outright. Jett being Japanese made him a bit more clear in my minds eye once the author finally stated it. It was just casually mentioned he was Asian...okay, is he bi-racial or full Asian? People from India could technically be considered Asian, so...catch my drift? Just like with Hazel, I kind of thought the vague description of her suggested she might have been bi-racial (white and african-american). I would rather an author risk offending a few people in order for the reader to have a better picture of the characters. I mean, descrbing a character, even their ethnicity, is helping to paint a picture, if the author pictures their character being of a specific ethnicity, just say so.

I could have done without the roommate/friend drama going as far as it did. I kind of felt like Shannon over reacted in that regard. And on that note, the author seemed to have lost track of the fact that Shannon had left her purse at the table and her friends kept it from her the night she first saw Jett at the bar and left with him. Because when Shannon and Jett went to pick up a drunk Javier later that same night, she dug in her purse for a leatherman tool. Well, a bit difficult to do that if your purse is still with your friends. Just an observation of where an editor should have been helpful.

I enjoyed this book and My Favorite Mistake by the same author.
