I have been reading King for years - but the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series, not the Kate Martinelli books. I started with the first one of the series, A Grave Talent, followed by To Play the Fool and now by this one ... With Child. The main character, Kate Martinelli, is an experienced San Francisco police officer in the mid 1990*s who has just been transferred to Homicide in the first book of the series. But as with all the Laurie R King books that I have read , these are so richly written that I become enthralled before the third page. We have a complex plot, which is threaded through the book. Wrapped around that are the main characters Kate, her police partner Al, her personal partner, Lee, and all their relationships and then we have yet another character which is the setting itself, San Francisco.
All these threads are neatly and subtlely wrapped together into a strong cord (and chord!) that leaves the reader wanting to know more about the people and places.
I highly recommend this entire series. While each book stands on its own as far as the crime that is the particular plot, you will want to start at the first one and work your way through for the pure pleasure of getting to know the characters and the pure pleasure of reading. If you think I am big fan of Laurie R King, you are right.

Great , exciting plot. Wonderful chemistry and emotional connections between pairs of characters. Kate and Al, Kate and Jules, Kate and Lee. Great ending.

The mystery part of this story took a long time to "get rolling." There was a lot of focus on the main character's feelings about her relationship. I didn't like this novel as much as "A Grave Talent" but I will continue to read the other books in the Kate Martinelli series.
Every Laurie R. King book is a winner.
I found this novel a little slower and a little less suspensful than some of her other Kate novels and the ending drops a bit - I thought it needed wrapping up with a few more details, but then I won't spoil the ending for those who have not read it. It does develop more of the relationships between Kate and her lover as well as her partner in the police force as well as friends. This is important information for other novels.
I think I like her Mary Russell novels better.
Each of Laurie King's mysteries is notably different from the last; there is more variation in characters and style in her books than that of some other mystery writers, such as Martha Grimes. Yet King continues to amaze me with the range and quality of her work. Not only could I not put this book down, I feel it is every bit as good as "A Grave Talent." I was intrigued with the character Jules Cameron from that story and looked forward to reading another mystery involving her. "With Child" is largely about Jules. King's characters practically jump off the page--they are that vivid. Not only is this good entertainment, it is fine writing.
I wonder if it might have increased the tension from the beginning if it had begun with a scene when the crime had just happened, then showing how things got to that point.
However my main problem with the novel is that I can't see why Kate would have booked a separate room for a girl who barely was 13. Had this not happened, the girl couldn't have gone missing for over 12 hours without Kate knowing about it.
Laurie King has a way of getting you to connect with her characters. The story line is always good with it's twists and turns and detail, but the characters come alive...and you care about them. That is why I will buy the next book in the series.
